Recovery

Sam, battled drug & alcohol addiction. His family and neighbors called the police multiple times in one month. Sam made the decision to go through inpatient day rehabilitation. After completing program, Sam began working with a Goodwill Community Support Worker to help him transition back into society and help support him in his recovery journey. Instead of going back to the environment that he left and risk relapse, Sam’s community support worker was able find him a different apartment and give him the fresh start he needed which helped him tremendously in maintaining sobriety. Sam has maintained sobriety for six months and is working on rebuilding his children’s trust.

Every day, we celebrate recovery as we support people living with a mental illness or substance use disorder manage their conditions successfully. We see first-hand, recovery is possible. Overcoming addiction, past abuse, loss, homelessness, and health issues can feel overwhelming and daunting. However, with supportive programs offering education, resources, and skill building tailored to each individual circumstance, lives change – working successfully, volunteering, supporting others in their recovery, maintaining sobriety, living healthy lives, and feeling determined. Thank you for your support in ending the stigma and supporting recovery.

Gaining Independence

Having lofty goals and looking for programs to support her, Tehia chose Goodwill. She aspired to build relationships in the community, develop friendships and work at a job where she could use her strengths and talents. Receiving both supported employment and day habilitation services, along with her determination and great attitude, Tehia is on target. When asked what is one thing you want people to know about you, she answered, “I am nice and helpful. I’m super friendly. I’m really good at completing tasks on time. I’m a forward thinker.” Goodwill is excited to be a part of her success. Marg, her Employment Specialist summarizes Tehia’s progress, “Tehia is hardworking, dedicated, friendly, social, loyal, well-liked and sees what needs to be done and does it.” In the future, Tehia aspires to live independently. While working towards her goal, Goodwill continues to assist with fine motor skills development, anxiety management, self-confidence building and job support. The only real disability is one’s attitude about it. Thank you for seeing ability, and not disability.
